About those feet of yours....
Hi, this is Gary from Auckland Orthotics in Auckland, asking you the question "Do you know you how to choose the proper orthotics for your feet?"
According to independent research from The American Podiatric Medical Association 75% of people experience foot pain at some time in the lives yet only a third of those seek expert care.
That's a real shame as foot pain can have a profound impact on your quality of life. And that's if you’re an average case. The more misaligned your feet, the more likely you are to experience problems such as high arch pain, Plantar Fasciitis, heel spurs, hammer-toes, bunions, shin splints, knee pain, hip pain, back pain... and other problems of the spine and pelvic area.
The question shouldn't be whether you need to visit an Orthotist it should be "do you need really need custom made orthotics?". Did you know that I've been an Orthotist and Prosthetist since 1985. Completed my Masters in Rehabilitation in 2006, specializing in Clinical Gait Analysis. I've treated thousands of people and I can tell you - your feet are unique. We all have 26 bones, 33 joints, 120 muscles and 7,800 nerves. But every foot is a different length and width. Some feet are flat. Others have high arches. When we delve a bit deeper, we find that feet are a complex structure that comes in many shapes, types and sizes. Every foot is different so the Orthotist must be able to custom make the orthosis to fit the individual.
It's no surprise people are making such poor decisions when choosing foot orthotics. It's not your fault. People in pain will look for a quick and cheap fix by purchasing rubber and gel inserts from a chain store. Sometimes these product are OK. Each product has a purpose. But without the proper guidance you can choose an inferior product, the wrong size, or the wrong arch support, and do more harm than good. Given the complexity of your feet do you really think you should be prescribing your own solution?
And making no choice at all, simply "suffering in silence" is the worst decision you can make. Half of all adults say that foot pain has restricted their activities - like walking, exercising, working, or playing with grandchildren - in some way. People say they would exercise more (39 percent) and participate in more activities (41 percent) if it weren’t for their foot pain.
